School Workforce Census Autumn 2011

Data on the school workforce has previously been collected from a variety of sources, mostly at school aggregate level. This data has not provided a comprehensive view of the employment situation in schools, particularly in relation to support staff. The School Workforce Census consists of individual-level records for all staff employed in schools (except occasional staff who have been in school for less than a month and support staff not employed directly by the school) and will enable the DfE and LAs to conduct detailed analyses of school staffing to inform policy on a wide range of recruitment, retention and staff-utilisation issues.

ANNUAL 2011 RETURN - Following the initial pilot and first statutory SWC return, the School Workforce Census has now been scheduled to take place once a year, during the Autumn term. The Annual SWC return date this year is 03/11/11

Data will be collected for the following staff:

All staff in regular service at school on census day

Any teachers or teaching assistants for whom the MIS will generate absence data for the previous academic year (01/09/10 - 31/08/11)

Any staff in schools whose contract/service agreement started or finished between 01/09/10 and 03/11/11.

Note: All relevant post A-level qualifications held by ALL staff e.g. NQF level 4 (or equivalent) will be required for the SWC 2011 return.
